Get in the ring
Jul10
I’ve had a passing interest in boxing at various times in my life. My brother has always been a huge fan of the sport and spent some time training to keep in shape after his football career ended. I’ve not followed the sport fervently but I’ve always been amazed by the things fighters like Muhammad Ali were able to accomplish. It’s simply astounding how far beyond the limitations of humanity Ali was able to reach (current health aside, since it seems even the greatest amongst us do have our limits). As a child of the 80′s I also have to admit to seeing all six “Rocky” films (the good, the bad, the ugly) and not being able to help but get fired up despite knowing exactly how the movie would end. I also have read and seen Fight Club an inordinate amount of times. There is an allure to being in a situation where you can just unleash all of your pent up inner struggles. The concept of the fight as a metaphor for finding personal identity is something that resonates very deeply with me. Recently due to various external factors, primarily mental and physical health, I decided to step up and get in the ring. The experience has been so intense that I can only describe it as transcendental.
Currently I’m reading On Boxing by Joyce Carol Oates. Oates seems to truly grasp the beauty of that intensity and the nature of the transcendental feeling…
